India is a land full of diversity in everything that we do, be it the culture, language or food. Plus, it would be absolutely safe to say the indigenous people are divided into such diversified tribes. And just like any other places of India, there are some tribes of Andaman and Nicobar islands that are certainly counted among the natives.

If you track down the native people of the islands, you will find that the dwellers belong to six different tribes (four in the Andaman and two in Nicobar). Let's find out a little more about the tribes of Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Tribes of Andaman Islands

Great Andamanese

The Great Andamanese lived in a large part of the island over the past. They belonged to 10 different tribes who spoke different (but related) languages but had a lot of cultural similarities. Due to the remoteness and their withdrawal from the outside world, the Andamanese managed to stay unearthed. However, the advent of the British changed everything.

Jarawa

The Jarawa tribe is one of the smallest tribe in present India. It has a population of under 500. It had shut itself off from the world and continues to do so even now. As a result, they still live a primitive life and live on fruits and hunting animals.

Onge

The Onge is undoubtedly one of the Andaman's oldest tribes. However, of late, they have started opening up to the world of the local people and the administration. Due to this, they now have houses constructed and have medicines provided too.

Sentinelese

The Sentinelese tribe is one of the most hostile ones you will find in the present day. They are very much closed to the outside world and their dwelling place is known as the hardest place to visit. They aren't friendly with the other people at all and greet any intrusion with stone pelting and bow-and-arrow attack.

Tribes of Nicobar islands

Nicobarese

The Nicobarese tribes are very open to development. In fact, due to their development, there are still thousands of people in this tribe while others fail to conserve themselves. The people from the communities love to dwell near the seashores, which has had a negative impact on them during the great tsunami and other natural disasters.

Shompen

The Shompen tribe are nomads. However, they are still open to the world outside them and gracefully accept gifts and aid from the government. The people are timid and are not hostile at all.

Is visiting these tribal areas prohibited?

Not all, but most of the tribal areas are prohibited by the government reasons. The main reason is that they often turn hostile to foreigners and may end up injuring them. Moreover, they depend mostly on natural sources of food like fishes, fruits, etc. Hence, any signs of modernization would give an impression of invasion.
